Both show and go matters when stepping into the arena of competition. Drinking with the boys, girls seem to be the number one topic. Usually the discussion begins by describing your fantasy girl. The popular criteria would be girl with big boobs, nice butt, long legs, etc. The logical thinker as I am, I bring the topic closer to reality. Everyone has a fantasy girl, but how about selecting the girl whom will make your dreams come true? The truth comes out and in response they added talent and knowledge. Beauty definately makes the list, but searching beyond that makes it sweeter. Mayleen is the girl that fits the description and I'm glad to be featuring this girl on Roxspin.
Roxspin So what you been up to Mayleen?
Mayleen You're too funny putting on that interviewers face (laughs). In what sense Gene? Career?
Roxspin I was hoping you would talk about work such as the late night video editing you were working on for MTV.
Mayleen You're killing me!
Roxspin This is funny!
Mayleen So far I've been very content with my life. I'm not the richest person in the world, but I feel that I'm making the right decisions and pieces of the puzzle are falling together. I think the best experience I've had so far (Besides Roxspin of course) has been hosting a TV show for the last 6 months. I was really new to show biz and had the opportunity to host an extreme sports show, which was broadcasted weekly on ESPN in Japan.
Roxspin I was about to ask that question! You recently finished a season of Be-it? How was that like? Am I experiencing a supernatural connection here?
Mayleen I read your mind! Well before I landed the hosting job of "Be-It", I was really lost about what I wanted to do in the entertainment industry. I knew for a fact that I wanted to do acting, modeling, something, but I think I really found my niche in hosting. I can be myself and let my genuine personality shine through. I think it's important for me to be recognized for my mind and personality rather than just my physical assets.
Roxspin You been working behind scenes like casting and so on. What made you decide on switching roles from working behind the scenes to becoming the icon of company or an organization?
Mayleen I guess it was really good timing and luck. After casting a few projects (commercial, print, and promotions) there were times when the client would ask if I wanted to try it out and so I did. My first job was hosting a commercial for a Korean herbal supplement. It was a really low-budget gig that I was casting for and ended up doing! I guess after that, I got the "acting bug" and really enjoyed being in front of the camera.
Roxspin Was this broadcasted on international television?
Mayleen It was broadcast in the LA area on the Korean channels. I haven't seen it yet and hope I never will!
Roxspin Deng you are funny, I got to see it. Were they looking for someone to portray a Korean female?
Mayleen No, they were looking for a "Caucasian" host. It's funny I've been cast as so many different ethnicities.
Roxspin Cool, you are universal!
Mayleen I've played a Caucasian host, Hispanic teenager, and a lot of times the ambiguous multi-ethnic chick.
Roxspin You are too funny! I'm enjoying the interview so much that I don't want it to end. Browsing your website I've learned you were born in Turkey. Share a little background on this.
Mayleen Well my friends tease me and call me a "FOB" because I didn't move to the U.S. until I was 11 years old. I grew up overseas because my dad worked for the U.S. Embassy so we moved every few years to an another country. I've lived in Turkey, Ecuardor, South Africa, Malaysia and also China but that was in college. I've visited over 20 countries.
Roxspin Jumping through many places, you must have came home with an accent. Now guys dig the girls with accents. I'm picturing them all over you at that time.
Mayleen Well I was about 5 years old and had a British accent. I wasn't into guys yet, but I do have a funny story.
Roxspin Please do share!
Mayleen When we lived in South Africa I was about 5 years old, chubby cheeks, and with a British accent. I went to school with a bunch of international kids and picked up the lingo.
Roxspin You were part of the international click!
Mayleen So one day I came home from school and I wanted to tell my mom that I needed new school supplies like pencils, paper, etc. I especially needed an eraser. However, the term we use for for eraser is "rubber".
Roxspin Like Trojans? Ha!
Mayleen So I go home and I'm like, "Mummy, I really need a rubber". She almost died! She's like, "You need a WHAT?" Little chubby me was like "A rubber, you know for school." She started breathing again and realized that I meant an eraser and not a condom.
Roxspin That is a cute and funny story.
Mayleen (Laughs)
Roxspin I'm cracking up. It's good for my health.
Mayleen That just shows there are so many cultural differences even when speaking the same language.
Roxspin Did you come from a rich family?
Mayleen Hmm that's hard to say. We weren't extremely rich, but we were well respected. I think living overseas diplomats are treated very well especially since the cost of living is much lower. You could afford more things like live-in maids, etc. When I moved back to the U.S. we lived like regular ol Americans...no maids or drivers.
Roxspin So you were born as an U.S. citizen as your parents were citizens?
Mayleen Correct.
Roxspin I'm moving over seas. I want my personal maid.
Mayleen It was really nice. It was a bit of culture shock moving back to the U.S.
Roxspin What is your overall goal in the business of entertainment?
Mayleen Well, I've really found my niche and would like to pursue hosting. My ultimate dream job would be hosting Wild On! I wouldn't mind trying out acting either, but i think it would be more of a hobby than career.
Roxspin Hobby no way! I see so much talent in front of me. Go after it!
Mayleen Ha ha thanks.
Roxspin If Roxspin TV existed, you would be the main star!
Mayleen Really? Wow, I'm flattered! Thank you. Don't you mean when Roxspin TV exists? Dream big!
Roxspin That backfired on me huh? Ha Ha. Yeah think big.
Mayleen (Smiles)
Roxspin For the record if you wish to answer. Kings or Lakers? NBA fans would like to know. (Grinning)
Mayleen Oh that's rough, you're going to get me in trouble! They are both extremely talented teams.
Roxspin But?
Mayleen I'm going to set the record straight and say that I'm an Official Kings fan, but I do enjoy a good Lakers game especially when they lose to the Kings. Oooooh! Did I say that on the record? Yikes, I can never show my face at the Staples Center again.
Roxspin You better fly up to Sacramento again and watch a game with us at Arco. By the way, we got your back!
Mayleen Maybe next time I'm up there! That would be fun.
